Overview

The story follows the Yoshis who are trapped in a storybook world and embark on an adventure to retrieve the stolen "Super Happy Tree." The storybook world consists of 6 pages, each containing 4 levels. By clearing any one level on a page, you move on to the next page. Each level contains 3 hidden 'Special Hearts,' and collecting more will unlock additional levels on the next page.

There are no goals in the levels. You clear a level by eating 30 pieces of fruit. There are 5 types of fruit: apple, banana, watermelon, grape, and melon. Each level contains 60 pieces of fruit. Additionally, there are 6 Yoshi colors: red, pink, yellow, green, blue, and light-blue, each of which favorite fruits that match their color. The Smile Meter at the top-left of the screen represents your life. By eating favorite fruit restores more life. All Yoshis like the melon, and the healing amount for all of them is the same. Each story also has a designated Lucky Fruit, which all Yoshis like, and eating it fully restores your life. Furthermore, Yoshis have preferences for enemies as well. Eating an enemy of the same color will restore more life. By eating fruits and enemies or defeating enemies, Yoshi's Mood will increase and be recorded as the score.

In addition to the 6 normal Yoshi colors, black and white Yoshis are hidden in some levels. Unlike the normal Yoshis, these Yoshis like all fruits and can eat most enemies to recover life. Also, the fireworks that appear when throwing eggs are larger.
